Also known as Poor Man's Orchid and Butterfly Flower. This colourful half hardy annual with fern like foliage is related to the petunia, and is a native of Chile. It can be grown as either an indoor spring flowering pot plant, or as a border plant. The many coloured clusters of flowers resemble butterflies and orchids when fully open, hence the common name. The colour range is extensive, with base colours of pink, white and lavender. They grow to around 300-400mm (12"-16") high, and flower from June to October (outdoors) and early Spring (indoors). The flowers tend to tumble thus making them a useful subject for baskets and containers.
